The US 2020 Election: Who Will Win – Trump or Biden?

This year America is going to have a presidential campaign like never before and the outcome of the US 2020 election will have a huge impact on everyone. People vote not only for the president, but also for Congress. Moreover, November elections also include state and local elections, so the situation varies greatly from state to state. Counting votes can take longer, experts say, because more people choose to vote by mail. This is a heated situation and it can’t end with a tie.

What do we know about Trump?

Trump is a famous businessman, a fodder of gossip columns, the leader of the free country, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. But Mr. President is above all a brand, and this brand has propelled him to many victories. Today, he hopes to secure his reelection.

One of the main legislations passed under Trump was the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that consisted of:

  1. Huge tax cut for corporations and temporary cuts for some other enterprises.
  2. Tax cuts for higher-income Americans, even though they were introduced to everyone.
  3. Money repatriated under this law went to buy dividends and share repurchases.

Unlike everyone else, Trump didn’t try to expand his base right after the election. He doubled down on policy that appeals to his base. His re-election campaign focuses on four major things: foreign policy, jobs, immigration and economy. As he said during his inaugural address during the US election 2020, every decision on these topics will be made to benefit American citizens.

What do we know about Biden?

Biden served in the senate from 1973 to 2009, and then from 2009 to 2017 as vice president. He was in two main committees: the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee. He finished law school and served in the New Castle County Council.

Since many Americans pay over 30% of their income on housing, this is a great issue this time. Biden has proposed the following:

  • create a refundable tax credit to help new homebuyers;
  • create a voucher program that will serve over 25% of all households;
  • reinstate the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule;
  • readdress discriminatory practices, such as redlining.

On April 25, Joe Biden officially joined the 2020 Democratic field and declared his candidacy for president. It happened almost two years after he and former President Obama exited the White House. As the world and America faces challenges, he offers to restore healthcare rights and environmental protections, give more opportunities for workers and work on problems together with international alliances.

Who has the power to hold the US election 2020?

It’s crucial to understand campaigns before going deeper into the process. Elections and campaigns include jargon, such as independent expenditures work and primaries. However, it’s relatively easy to understand who is who and demystify buzzwords.

In the US, there is a two-party political system. The make-ups, platforms and names of the parties have changed many times, but we usually have a democracy with two parties. These parties select candidates to run for office. Elections can be partisan for certain offices (e.g. judgeships or schools) or non-partisan, which means candidates don’t officially identify with a party. It can be harder or easier to turn out to vote, and this depends on our governments. Still, voting is the main tool American citizens have to take back control.

Why is campaign finance a concern in the United States?

Candidates have to raise funds. It means people have to give their money to these candidates to support them, and the candidates pay back with various favors. They can also be biased towards people who donated the biggest amounts of money. The problem is that these people become unofficial sponsors who help candidates get where they want.

According to official statistics, campaign expenditures have grown all over the world in the last 20 years. This is the most evident in the US, where political action committees play a major role in fund-raising and spending the money. Their activities aren’t regulated as strictly as those of political candidates.

During the US election 2020, there are many people who give small amounts of money. This isn’t a new thing; for instance, out of $124 million that Bernie Sanders raised in January, over 65% was raised from people who donated less than $200. The same happened with Joe Biden who raised $70 million, of which 40% came in small contributions. Trump raised $218 million, and around 20% came from smaller donations.

In addition to limited funds, there are source restrictions. As such, labor organizations and corporations of any size can’t donate directly to committees or candidates. The same is true for foreign nationals and government contractors. They aren’t allowed to give at all.

If that’s not enough, people are worried about grey money that isn’t properly disclosed. There is a pretty straightforward system in America, but people always find ways to go around laws and hide the money. This time Americans are also concerned about this topic because they don’t know the source of the money. Therefore, they don’t get the information they should get and can’t verify that candidates are legally able to participate in elections. There is always an overlap between the money and fund-raising campaigns.

What is the election procedure in the USA?

The election procedure can be described in four sentences, but it’s much more complex than that. Every four years American citizens vote for a person they want to see as their president. The president makes decisions regarding the country. This is the person in charge of one of the biggest superpowers. Some people believe that the US president is one of the most powerful people in the world.

General campaigning starts after a nominee is chosen from every party through national conventions and primaries. These candidates explain their view, travel the country and speak about their plans. They need to win support of potential voters. A huge part of the elections is debates and advertising. The US also has an Electoral College.

In the past, Constitution framers didn’t trust politicians and wanted an additional security level. Thus, there are factions of citizens with an interest that doesn’t harm the country as a whole. As of today, the Electoral College is a formality. The concept stays confusing to many people, and America has only had 5 contested elections so far. In 2016, for example, Trump was elected with 304 electoral votes.

People don’t have to vote according to the main vote of a group they represent. However, most electors follow their party’s choice. Even though the actual vote takes place between November and December, it’s possible to predict a winner on election night.

Why is the 2020 US election the most important ever?

The upcoming US election is arguably the most important thing of this century. This is a phrase parroted by other politicians in hopes of creating a buzz around them. However, this time the cliché means something. The decisions American citizens make will reverberate for years to come, through all branches of the government. In 2020, there will be elections for a third of all seats in the Senate and for all seats in the House of Representatives.

It is hard to remember any other political event that’s been equally polarized. Joe Biden and his mate, Kamala Harris, have called this election “the soul of the nation”. They say that the president forces authoritarian practices that must be stopped. At the same time, Trump and his supporters say that it’s all about America. Both candidates address such issues as attitudes to NATO and Russia, healthcare and attitudes to alliances.

With five tech titans making up to 25% of the S&P 500’s market capitalization, both Trump and Biden address the issue:

  1. Trump has railed against these tech companies. His actions have stopped Facebook from enforcing their anti fake-news policies.
  2. Biden is also against these corporations. He says that they sell user data and avoid paying taxes. He calls these companies monopolies and proposes they be broken up. His actions resulted in the investigation from the FTC.

The results of elections shape the makeup of the US and state governments. Republicans had suffered under lines drawn by Democratic politicians that controlled Congress for 40 years. At the same time, Democrats see the current situation as the practice of gerrymandering. Nowadays, everyone agrees to the fact that the redistricting process is important so much that there are outside groups that accept donations from mega donors. These donors help coordinate their activities across the states.

America has never seen these groups before and they are going to fund the next years of litigation. The legislative majorities will probably wind up in court. Both Democrats and Republicans have invested record sums in election campaigns to turn out voters who are usually disengaged from politics. Today, every vote matters.

What role do states play in elections?

In the US, people don’t vote for the president directly. Instead, they choose people in the Electoral College who cast their votes based on how most people have voted. This usually happens in December. The number of electors depends on the population of the state. In Florida, for example, there will be 29 electoral votes (the same is true for California, New York and Texas). If a candidate wins in a big state, they have a better chance of becoming the president. The candidate needs to collect 270 electoral votes.

Even though every big party has more than one state it counts on during the 2020 US elections, several states are close to call. These are called “swing states” – areas with populations that are divided really closely politically. These states have swung back and forth between different candidates. Politicians try to target these places with advertising, campaign visits and staffing.

Even experts can’t always tell which states are swing ones. In 2020, many experts see Florida, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania as toss-ups. At the same time, other experts add North Carolina and New Hampshire to the list. It means that these are the states where candidates will try to figure out how to reach potential voters.

Can mail-in voting help?

With the pandemic continuing to influence everyday life, many states have decided to accept mail-in voting to ensure safer and better-regulated 2020 US election. Even though this is a new concept for many people, this has some advantages over a traditional voting practice. For example, mail-in voting is convenient, which means that more people will vote. They can do it in the comfort of their own homes and follow social distancing guidelines.

Indeed, a mail-in vote can result in a higher turnout rate and an expansion of the franchise. Of course, potential voters should have the education they need around this activity. They won’t need to wait in long lines and can complete their ballot at their own pace. No more polling places and no more risk of contracting the virus. The new vote method allows people to take as much time as they need to study policies without feeling pressured into a decision. They can get as comfortable as they want.

This time, every vote is important. Together, Americans have the ability to change the system in a way that prioritizes equality. As this election comes closer, remember that your vote counts. Whether you prefer to vote in person or per mail, you have the ability to build the country that champions equal rights for everyone.

While an election is getting into full swing, the vibe is changing completely. Smaller incidents get more attention. As of now, Joe Biden has a lead over Trump in the national polling average. He is also favored to win the election. At the same time, Trump also has a good chance of winning because even though the polls are stable, everything may change.
